Mechanical Behaviour of Unshelled Moringa oleifera Seeds at Varying Moisture Contents

The determination of mechanical properties unshelled Moringa oleifera seeds was studied under compression test at varying orientations and moisture contents for postharvest equipment design. A completely randomized block design (CRBD) applied in designing the experiment. impact content levels (10.25, 17.33, 24.47, 32.34% dry basis) on force bio-yield rupture, deformation, energy crushing strength, elastic modulus seed samples were investigated. Polynomial functions 2nd order with coefficients correlation ranging between 0.642 ≤ R2 0.999 gave best fit described resulting relationships respect to two loading axes. Results obtained showed that had maximum values 80.3 N, 110 N 257.2 J, force, rupture respectively (10.25% d.b., horizontal orientation; whereas minimum 31.5 54.9 51.3 J occurred (32.34% d.b.) vertical orientation. Also, compressive strength 5.8 mm-2 orientation 10.25% d.b. (2.5 mm-2) content. sample exhibited less resistive position as increased; position, cell’s edges provide some form shield against external pressure which resulted increased resistance per contact area sample.
